The Michigan Wolverines and Texas Longhorns, two of college football's most storied programs, met for the first time at the 2005 Rose Bowl. One of the most highly anticipated games of all time lived up to its hype and then some. Stars like Michigan wide out Braylon Edwards and return specialist Steve Breaston delivered record-breaking performances, while dynamic Texas quarterback Vince Young became a household name. And in the end, a little known, senior kicker would become a hero.
Back and forth, up and down the field, the Longhorns and Wolverines combined for 792 yards of offense. Edwards, a future first-round draft pick of the Cleveland Browns, would set a Rose Bowl record by hauling in 10 passes for 106 yards and three touchdowns, including a slick, nine-yard grab to give the Wolverines their first lead late in the third quarter. Meanwhile, Breaston was torching the Longhorns in every way possible. The speedster broke the Rose Bowl mark with 221 yards on kick off returns. But in the end, Young would be too much for the Lloyd Carr's Wolverines to handle.
After Michigan built a 31-21 lead at the end of the third quarter, Young simply took over. The sleek Longhorn quarterback ran for two touchdowns in the final period, including a dazzling 23-yard burst to put the Longhorns back on top 35-34 with four minutes to play.
The Wolverines would answer with a Garrett Rivas field goal with three minutes left in the game, simply too much time for Young to work his magic. He promptly led Texas on a 10-play, 47-yard drive, capped off by a 37-yard Dusty Mangum field goal as time expired to give the Longhorns a historic 37-35 victory. Young accounted for nearly every yard on the game-winning drive, finishing with 193 yards rushing and a Rose Bowl record four touchdowns. Only a sophomore, Young also threw for 180 yards and a touchdown.
